Farmers as a Defining Force in Austria
Although fewer and fewer people are working in agriculture, it still plays an important role in media coverage. Yet agriculture has changed radically over the last 100 years. This new “zeit.geschichte” documentary traces the path from the largely self-sufficient farming community of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to the present day, which is now fully digitized in some areas. In doing so, it also breaks with the cliché of the self-sufficient peasantry of the past, living in harmony with nature. The documentary takes an in-depth look at the role of women in agriculture. Not only did their importance for agricultural production grow during wartime, but it was also mostly women who had to take care of the farms in addition to their families. The production traces the path of farmers from self-sufficiency to becoming suppliers of food. It thus provides an overview of the history of agriculture in Austria and also highlights the challenges facing farmers today.
